Work toward a more inclusive workforce

Having a culture of inclusion & diversity in the workplace is a top priority for a lot of companies in Canada. To be able to support a diverse employee base that is more inclusive for the LGBT+ community is part of the journey toward a stronger and better workforce.

Gender Affirmation

In Canada, some of the provincial government plans will cover the major surgeries toward gender affirmation. The rest of the cost (aesthetic-based surgery or support for mental health) might be covered by the company benefits as well. From psychological support to hormone therapy, the help of work benefits is a good step toward gender affirmation and of a more inclusive workforce.

Benefits Of Inclusive Workforce

Offering such employee benefits to members of the LGBTQ+ community is a great way to not only boost morale but also bring value to the company and the clients. It is not only about covering the costs of surgery or support, it is also about making sure that it becomes part of the conversation. Whether it is via webinars, meetings or guest speakers, it is important to give a platform for people to express themselves.

A Journey

Another form of support offered by some Canadian companies is to create a “playbook” that offers tips on how you can be welcoming and help to make the journey seamless. This “playbook” usually starts from the physical transition and ends after the gender affirmation journey is done. Of course, it is not perfect since everyone is different, but it is a step in the right direction.
